President's Report by Greg Joumas
Every year the San Diego Ad Club exercises one of the most important elements of a democratic society; the peaceful transfer of power. As I take over the reins we'd like to say thank you to Andreas Roell for his outstanding leadership and drive over the last two years as President of the San Diego Ad Club. Under that leadership ...
• Andreas has energized the San Diego ad community ... attracted younger members and integrated the interactive space into the Ad Club
• When we had successful luncheon programs ... he suggested we build them out to half day and full day events including seminars, workshops
• He launched our highly successful seminar series and personally booked many of our speakers
• He founded Interactive Day and has chaired the event for the fourth year in a row ... it's grown from a luncheon in year one ... to a half day in year two ... to a full day plus happy hour last year and this year
• He has led outreach to key industry leaders ... agency presidents, CMO's at San Diego's biggest companies, media directors and marketers ... with intimate exclusive dinners. This has given the Ad Club the opportunity to tell our story while listening to their desires for professional education and networking.
• He has made the Geary team available to the Ad Club for the past 3 or 4 years ... they host our website and they provide us with countless hours of tech support to make our online experience work better for our members
• He has helped to recruit an amazing board of directors that will continue to build the Ad Club's influence in the San Diego business arena ...
• He has applied his business skills and helped to upgrade the overall effectiveness of the Ad Club
• He has been described as visionary ... brilliant ... driven ...
For all of these reasons and many more, Andreas was honored with the 2008 AAF Silver Medal Award at the Creative Show in April. The AAF Silver Medal is presented at Ad Clubs around the country at the discretion of each Board of Directors. It is a prestigious group of individuals who have contributed to the success of their local clubs
At Geary Interactive, their motto is "Dream Big" and Andreas personifies this philosophy in both his business as well as his work on behalf of the Ad Club
As some of you may know Andreas has moved on to serving as the Governor for AAF District 15 (southern Nevada and Southern California) so we will be seeing him, working with him, and certainly benefiting from his representation with the AAF and continued association with the San Diego Ad Club board of directors.
Thanks Andreas.

Bogusky Raves ...
It was an absolutely amazing night for San Diego's ad industry ... Ad Club president Greg Joumas (SVP Jack In The Box) hosted the legendary Alex Bogusky (Crispin, Porter + Bogusky) for an exquisite night of great conversation.
The sold out event began with a reception at the beautiful USD Garden of the Sea. Guests enjoyed the perfect San Diego weather, expansive views of Mission Bay and the Pacific Ocean while imbibing delicious food and drink. Alex generously roamed throughout the crowd and as he said when he first sat down in the auditorium "this may be the first time I have actually met everyone in the audience".
The spectacular Joan Kroc Center for Peace and Justice auditorium created an intimate setting for a free flowing conversation guided by Ad Club president Greg Joumas. Alex entertained questions that had been submitted ahead of time and also answered questions from the audience. The evening was videotaped, check the Ad Club website for it around August 15th. Pictures will also be available online shortly.
Ad Club Board member Alex Funk, digital-telepathy, recorded some take-aways in his blog: Click here
From out post event surveys here's what you had to say ...
• I thought it was very inspiring to hear what Alex had to say. He was very open and honest about everything, and it was cool to hear the rationale behind some of those amazing campaigns. It made you want to go to work for him.
• Definitively inspiring, great interview style by Greg. Good questions. Good insights. Hope for more, maybe Jeff Goodby??? Thanks.
• Alex was very inspiring, I really liked that he showed examples and went over the main concept and behind de scenes information about those campaigns. He was very nice, and approachable specially to students, giving us valuable information.
• Yes, he is a genius in his profession with a great personality.
• Alex was very entertaining and it was a tremendous venue.
• Great event, it was my first one and I was very impressed.
• I was very inspired by attending this event and liked the format (of having the Ad Club President sitting beside Alex Bogusky).
• Yes! He has reached great success doing what he loves. This is very inspirational.
• It was inspiring because he was very candid and honest - a breath of fresh air! It was great to hear his insights. The venue was great and lent itself to a very relaxed conversation forum. It was a great informal setting and helped to create a very open feel. Greg did a great job moderating the event.
• Yes, can we invite others from around the country to come speak and share their experiences?
• Very inspiring. An interesting personality, with incredibly simple yet compelling insights into the ad industry.
• I loved the "Actors Studio" style. both Alex and his interviewer where engaging.
• It was very inspiring. I was very glad to see that one of the biggest names in Advertising didn't act like it. Alex was funny, very down to earth, and seemed like he didn't take his job too seriously. That was very refreshing to see.
• These events are very beneficial and I hope there are more to come.
• Loved the format!
• It was nice to hear about his background, history with his agency, and his take and execution.

• Yes, very inspiring! It was great to hear a candid, honest conversation from one of the best in the business.
• I took copious notes, finding several insights and golden nuggets in the course of the evening. Some of the things he said were so simple, yet stimulus for some larger ideas that I could apply to my clients.
• I found it very inspiring. I attend the Art Institute, and i am only in my third quarter, Alex Bogusky is a person who i've seen what people can do. Making advertising simple by simpliy just thinking of the basics.
• Bogusky definitely lived up to my expectations. Irreverent, cocky, and brilliant...and by the way, he hates advertising!
• Yes. I thought it was an overall great experience, from the hosted cocktails and plentiful food in that beautiful courtyard, to the personal introductions to Alex by Sheila, to the intimate hall and casual presentation format, with a truly cool and relevant guest speaker. Well done!
• Alex was fabulous! Smart, funny and down to earth. Anyone who missed it truly missed out!
• Have more dialogues like this . . . and show and tell. Networking was great.
• I would love to hear more top people in the industry speak here in San Diego. It's great to get the perspective of the minds behinds those memorable campaigns. |

FLASHES
by Rick Griffin
The Copley Press Inc., publisher of The San Diego Union-Tribune, has hired an investment banker to explore future options for the company, including its possible sale. Evercore Partners (NYSE:EVR), a New York-based investment banking firm, represented Copley Press in the sale of the newspapers it previously owned in Los Angeles and the Midwest. Those sales were completed in 2006 and 2007. Since the death of former publisher Helen Copley in 2004 and the assumption of the title by her son, David, rumors of the sale of the U-T have surfaced occasionally. Stung from a gradual slide in both its weekday and Sunday circulations, and an increasing loss of advertising, the company has slashed expenses by cutting hundreds of jobs in recent years. The newspaper’s daily circulation Monday-Friday (as of March 31) was 288,669, a 2.59 percent drop from the same period last year, according to Editor& Publisher magazine.
Now the question arises over what organization or individual would purchase the paper if Copley Press goes through with the sale. Some have speculated that a media mogul, like Rupert Murdoch, might be interested. Perhaps another publishing company, such as McClatchy. What happens if nobody makes a bid for the U-T? Its closure seems to be the most unlikely prospect of all. While newspapers are having their worst year since the Great Depression, they remain in business. No major American city has lost its only paper, although many no longer have competing papers.
In a recent “Readers Representative” column, U-T editor Karin Winner said, “Many industry pundits predict we’ll hit bottom within the next six to 12 months and then begin to stabilize, but those months are going to be tough. The combination of a depressed real estate market and spiraling food and gasoline costs has exacerbated everything. I feel strongly that the role of the newspaper is changing and that the number of newspapers may end up being condensed, but the major metropolitan newspapers will continue to play an important role in key marketplaces in tandem with the Web.”

The Los Angeles Times has announced that it will no longer publish a separate Opinion and Book Review section. Also, the print issue of The Guide will no longer be published, but will continue to appear at www.theguide.latimes.com. The Home section has moved to Saturdays and has combined with the Real Estate section. Meanwhile, after a 21-month tenure that encompassed the departures of two editors and plans for the sharpest staff and production cuts in the newspaper’s history, publisher David Hiller resigned. Tribune Co. -- which owns The Times and other media assets, including the Chicago Tribune and KTLA-TV Channel 5, as well as the Chicago Cubs baseball team -- has named no successor to Hiller.

XETV-TV/Channel 6 has become “San Diego 6 The CW,” and the proud new home of The CW Television Network. The station logo and primetime programming will change, but the rest of the program schedule will remain the same, including “San Diego 6 in the Morning,” “San Diego 6 News @10 p.m.” and “San Diego Living.” According to the May 2008 Nielsen Media Research rating survey, the 10 p.m. and morning newscasts were rated #1 among adults 18-54.

KSWB-TV is now a Fox Television Network affiliate, and become known as “Fox 5 San Diego.” Rich Goldner, who spent 17 years with KTLA in Los Angeles, has been named news director. The station will air the four-hour “Fox 5 Morning News” with co-anchors Raoul Martinez and Arthel Neville and Chrissy Russo as weather and traffic anchor, as well as the full hour “Fox 5 News at Ten,” with anchors Kathleen Bade on weekdays and Susan Lennon on weekends.

After 10 years of traffic reports and hosting “Streetside San Diego,” Kimberly King has left KNSD-TV/Channel 39 to focus on working with local non-profit organizations.

The identity switch between XETV and KSWB is the first major affiliation change in San Diego since ABC and NBC swapped local affiliates in 1977.

McGraw-Hill Broadcasting has announced the appointment of Jeffrey Block as v.p. and general manager of KGTV-TV/Channel 10 and its Spanish-language Azteca America affiliate. Block will be responsible for the strategy and day-to-day editorial and business operations of the stations and their digital properties. Block held several positions over 18 years at Cox Television in San Francisco-Oakland, including v.p. of digital strategy, where he developed and led the strategies for the 15-station group. Most recently, Block has been an independent media consultant.

Doug Myrland, general manager of KPBS, has announced he will be retiring earlier than planned. Myrland said he has decided to retire after his 56th birthday in December rather than next year. Myrland became acting general manager in 1992. His tenure has seen its fortunes rise and fall several times. The station ended fiscal 1998-99 with a surplus of more than $1 million, allowing KPBS to beef up its radio-news staff. In 2001, a shortfall of more than $2 million led to the dismissal of 14 employees. KPBS expects to spend $19.3 million in the 2008-2009 fiscal year, compared to $20.6 million in the previous year. Recently, six employees were laid off and KPBS will stop publishing the On Air guide.

Ken Kramer, reporter and anchor with KNSD-TV/NBC 7/39, recently signed a new three-year contract to remain with the station and continue producing and hosting “About San Diego.” The award-winning, half-hour show, which can be seen on Sundays at 6 p.m., features stories about the people and history of the place we call home.

NBC 7/39’s Jim Laslavic served as emcee at the National Multiple Sclerosis Society’s recent fund-raising dinner that honored San Diego Chargers head coach Norv Turner. Turner’s late mother Vicky suffered from multiple sclerosis, spending the latter years of her life in a wheelchair before passing away in 1989. Turner’s oldest sister Janis, who lives in Sacramento, was diagnosed with MS about 10 years ago. About 425 people attended the event held at the US Grant Hotel.
