SMOOTHING OUT THE ONBOARDING PROCESS

 A Message from the Editor

Dear Recruiters,

It’s time for the 3rd quarter edition of The Innovative Recruiter, our quarterly newsletter exclusively for the recruiting and staffing industry.

If business is slower than usual and/or you’re still feeling some of the aftershocks of the economy, now might be the right time to evaluate and refine some of your business processes and procedures. After all, when things pick up you’ll hopefully be too busy to step back and assess what and where changes need to be made! That’s why this quarter we’ve decided to focus on a sometimes overlooked element of the recruiting process: onboarding. When done well, onboarding can help make sure that the candidates you’ve spent so long attracting, pursuing, and interviewing decide to stay with your clients.

In the sidebar, I’d like to point out our latest Recruiter of the Quarter, Maria Elena Campa of StaffingForce, whose expertise in clerical and light industrial recruiting has helped her build a thriving business. We are thrilled to congratulate Maria, and wish her much continued success!

Enjoy the rest of your summer, and as always, I welcome your questions, concerns, feedback, or even an idea for a future newsletter.

Best wishes,

Gaby Mergenthal

Innovative Recruiter of the Quarter: Maria Elena Campa

Meet Maria Elena Campa, IES’ most recent Recruiter of the Quarter. Maria Elena is a Senior Consultant with StaffingForce, where she specializes in clerical and light industrial placements.

A professional with 12 years in the recruiting industry, Maria Elena says the most important lesson she’s learned on the job is to “treat everyone with respect, dignity, and professionalism.” She takes a highly personalized approach to her work, and says her recruitment philosophy is to “find the right company who treats the employee with dignity and respect. If the work environment is one that would be acceptable for me to work in, then it will be a place for our employees. Otherwise, I won’t do business with that company!”

Maria Elena lives in Fontana, California, and in her spare time enjoys vacationing with her family. To honor her recruiting accomplishments, she will receive a $50 American Express gift card and certificate from IES. Congratulations, Maria Elena!

The Recruiter of the Quarter award is an honor presented to one outstanding IES recruiter client after the close of each quarter. Honorees are selected based on a variety of criteria, including quarterly revenue generated, number of new clients and employees payrolled through IES, and jobsite safety success.

Smooth Hiring: Dos and Don'ts for a Wrinkle-Free Onboarding Process

As the saying goes, “you don’t get a second chance to make a first impression.” The impressions formed by both the employer and the new hire on the first day of work can have a lasting impact. Employee onboarding (the term for new hire orientation and mainstreaming) is a critical part of the
hiring process, and can be an important factor in employee satisfaction, retention, and even their
overall performance and impact. Yet many recruiters fail to consider the implications of onboarding,
and their role in making the process a smooth and productive one for clients and employees.
While the bulk of a recruiter’s job lies in sourcing and interviewing candidates, savvy recruiters understand that the process of bringing a new employee into a client company can really make
or break the experience for all involved

As a recruiter, the onboarding process presents some unique challenges: you can’t be there for your new hire’s first day, you can’t influence or control the corporate culture at your client’s company, and you can’t do too much about the orientation systems or training processes in place at the new job.

So what can you do to help your new hire and your client company smoothly navigate the onboarding process? Below are some helpful “Dos and Don’ts” for providing valuable support and communication during those first days on the job as well as the weeks leading up to them:
