The 5 Best Interview Questions You Aren't Asking

 A Message from the Editor

Dear Recruiters,

Happy New Year! With 2010 now in full swing, it’s a great time to take a look at your current recruiting style and evaluate what’s working and what isn’t. For this issue, we’ve decided to focus on that always important (but often overlooked) portion of recruitment: the interview.

To help fine-tune candidate screening skills and give our typical interview questions a makeover, we’ve enlisted the help of noted hiring expert Barry Deutsch of IMPACT Hiring Solutions. Barry has a long history of helping small and large businesses attract, hire, and retain top talent. I hope you enjoy his tips for insightful interviewing as much as I did.

Also in this issue, I’m pleased to introduce Paul Alvidrez, our newest Recruiter of the Quarter. Paul is President of Synergy Staffing and has built a highly successful business doing contract and direct recruiting for the IT and administrative fields. You can read more about him below. Congratulations, Paul!

Best wishes,

Gaby Mergenthal

Success-Based Sourcing: Separating Good Interviews from Good Candidates

Too often, many of us end up hiring the candidate who’s best at the interview, but may not be best at the job. We tend to rely heavily on instinct and good first impressions, and favor candidates who give us the smoothest, most polished answers. As a result, we often end up hiring the most articulate interviewee, but not necessarily the one most likely to succeed long-term in the position. So how do you fine-tune your screening skills to separate the good interview from the truly great candidate? One way to begin is by giving your interview questions an overhaul: weeding out those that are no longer helpful, and adding new ones that provide insight into how a candidate is really likely to perform in a position.

For help, IES turned to Barry Deutsch of Impact Hiring Solutions. Barry has 15+ years of experience in executive search practices, and his “You’re Not the Person I Hired” workshops have helped thousands of companies understand how to find and hire the right people. When it comes to interview questions, Deutsch says, most people are missing the mark by continuing to do the same old things they’ve always done. “The majority of hiring managers and executives tend to use the same, standard list of mundane questions,” he says. “In fact, most executives will tell you that their list of interview questions is based on what they were asked in their own interviews years (or even decades) before.”

Below, Deutsch offers a list of some common interview questions to stop asking, along with the 5 critical ones that provide worthwhile insight and will hopefully keep your clients well-supplied with outstanding talent.

Innovative Recruiter of the Quarter: Paul Alvidrez

Paul Alvidrez is a true recruiter success story. Beginning his career 16 years ago recruiting for entry-level positions, Paul worked his way up to a sales manager position, and is now the President of Synergy Staffing, which specializes in staffing contract and direct placements within the IT and administrative industries. Paul partners with IES to provide payrolling for his contract placements. “I don’t have the time or expertise to process payroll in-house,” he says. “IES has allowed me the flexibility to concentrate on what I do best, which is recruiting the top IT talent for my clients.”

Paul’s recruiting philosophy is simple: “it’s all about relationships,” he says. “I’ve seen firsthand how strong relationships lead to an increase in business, and how they help resolve challenges that come up, often diffusing potential problems before they create bigger issues.” His dedication to these relationships has helped Paul maintain a strong business even during the current economic downturn. “It’s easy to be there for a client when things are going great and business is good,” he says, “but it’s often how you react during downturns in business or during setbacks that can really set you apart from your competition.”

When he’s not working, Paul enjoys spending time with his wife and three sons, ages 12, 10, and 1. A resident of Thousand Oaks, California, he enjoys taking his family to sporting events to cheer on their favorite teams: the Lakers, Dodgers and USC Trojans.

To honor his recruiting accomplishments, he will receive a $50 American Express gift card and certificate from IES. Congratulations, Paul!

The Recruiter of the Quarter award is an honor presented to one outstanding IES recruiter client after the close of each quarter. Honorees are selected based on a variety of criteria, including quarterly revenue generated, number of new clients and employees payrolled through IES, and jobsite safety success.
